September 26th is known as Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the membrane lining of the lungs and abdomen and it is caused by asbestos exposure.
Every year, close to 2,500(UK) and 3,000(US) people are diagnosed with Mesothelioma and are given an average of 10 months to live. That's 300 days. Just 7,200 hours
There is NO known cure for Mesothelioma.
I was contacted by a lovely man called Cameron Von St. James about spreading the word about Mesothelioma. His wife, Heather is a rare Mesothelioma cancer survivor who beat the odds when she was only given 15 months to live.
Cameron and Heathers mission is to spread awareness of Mesothelioma and hopefully encourage others that might be going through treatment or those who may have already been diagnosed.
What is Asbestos? Where is it found?
Asbestos is a natural fibrous mineral that was favored by builders and contractors for its low heat conductivity and resistance to melting and burning. Although Asbestos is banned in the UK, it is still present in buildings and equipment that were built or produced before the ban and cause harm when the fibres are inhaled or ingested. Asbestos is not banned in the US and can be found in older homes, schools factories and commercial buildings.
What are the Symptoms?
Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose because the early sings and symptoms can be subtle or mistaken.
The most common symptoms are breathlessness, lower back or chest pain, fatigue and weight loss. Diagnosis is the most important thing about Mesothelioma as early detection is the best way to begin the fight early and start treatment.
The best defense we have against Mesothelioma is knowledge and making people aware of the risks and what could harm us or others. Early detection is vital and it is always preferable to catch a canter in the earliest possible stage
