Great North Run - Training Diary - Week 9

8/24/2015

This week was a good week. All my runs were done and completed, maybe not on the day they were meant to - but all the runs I had scheduled were completed. Which hasn't been the case for a couple of weeks so it was nice to fully complete a week.

As I said above, I'm so happy I've been able to complete all my scheduled runs this week - for the last few weeks I've felt like I was failing with my training as I was either changing runs or not completing them properly so I'm glad I've snapped out of that one.

Wednesday and Thursdays run was exactly on plan. I had an easy 3 mile run which was great and no issues at all. Thursday, I met Phillips Mum in Ely and we went on a 5 mile run - doing the same route that we did for the triathlon the week before -  the hills still sucked but I think it will be good to include some hills into my training for the last couple of weeks leading up to GNR. Afterwards, we had a little swim before I headed to work.
I took my lovely Smart Shake with me, which was pretty handy to have a protein shake straight after I'd finished a run and a swim. Need to get in that proteins!
I swapped my runs slightly and ended up moving my Fridays run to Saturday so I could do the park run - that will probably become a regular occurrence as Phillip and I quite enjoy doing to the park runs now! - I managed to shave 30 seconds of my last park run time, which i'm happy about. It was damn hot out too!

My training plan said 10 km race but that's what I did last week and I said I'd be swapping the weeks around, so 10 miles was on the cards this week. It went much better than my 9 miler from week 7 and I was thankful for that. I was dreading it after my 9 miler but it seemed to go much better. I still had to stop a couple of times but I didn't feel anywhere near as bad as the last time and I didn't cry when I got back either.

I think I'm going to have to start going to bed early on a Saturday and getting up at like.. 5 am on a Sunday morning in order to be out the door before the heat - the heat was still killer at 8:30 am when I went out.

So, I briefly mentioned in my recap post yesterday that I was going my parents this weekend. Usually when I go to my parents, its hard for me to run any sort of long distances as I have NO clue where to run when I'm there and I would rather not get lost and prefer to run half the distance out and then have to run the same distance back.

Usually, if I get too close to the house, my brain tells my legs its totally OK to give up and go home - so I stay away from the house until I'm just about finished with my run.

So, I still aim to do all of my runs for this week - but I'm going to have to swap them around a bit.I'm going to try and get my long run done on Wednesday after work - I'm going to run 3-4 miles around ely, then head back home along the river and finish up the last mile or so round the block from the house - it should hopefully make 11 miles.

I'm either going to do my 5 miler tomorrow or Friday, I'm gonna base it on how I'm feeling when I'm out. Then I'll just have two runs to complete. One Friday and one on Sunday - which shouldn't be too bad as I'll only have a 3 miler to do.

As long as I get all 4 of my runs scheduled for this week, then I'm happy!

Question: Do you always get in your runs whilst you're away for a few days? or do you try and schedule them before you go?
