It goes without saying that motivation to attend classes or exercise during the winter tends to dwindle when it gets colder. It's darker in the mornings and at night and we're more likely to make excuses NOT to workout and instead go into hibernation in the winter months, snuggle under the covers and even get a few hours of extra shut eye in the morning!

However, it's important to keep that inner fire going. As much as I would love to have an extra hour or so in bed in the warmth, I know I feel a hell of a lot better when I make an effort to get up and move my body! Whether that's rolling out the mat in my living room and doing some yoga(or taking yourself down to a local yoga studio for a class) or maybe putting on your kit and going out for a run.

So, here are some tips from the latest Om Yoga Magazine to get you out of that warm bed, up off the sofa, or wherever it is that you may be and into a studio for a class, into the living room for your own workout or dare I say - outside for a run!

Embrace the Elements
There's no such thing as the wrong weather, only the wrong choice in the clothes you wear. I admit, I've definitely used the excuse of the weather being too bad that I can't go out for a run when I have clothes that can protect me from the colder, wet weather!
So, wrap up warm for travelling to your yoga class and embrace those elements! Wear some extra layers too! - it will take you longer to warm up if your class is quite slow paced, so this will definitely help!

Move Like Jagger
Moving breath and body together in Vinyasa, or in a dynamic class, will generate enough heat and energy to power a small car! Plus, I'm sure we all know that after you've finished exercising and working up a sweat, you will feel less sluggish, more energized and ready to take on anything!

Best Mates
Yoga has many, many mind-body benefits. Who am I kidding! Any exercise that you do can have positive effects on your mind and body! Go down to your local studio, hang out with some like-minded people, ask a friend to come along with you on a run - being social will boost your mood and you're more likely to want to do it more often. Schedule classes or runs with your friends - it'll be the motivation for both of you to stay accountable during the winter months!

Open Up
The cold tends to have everyone curling up, hunching their shoulders and retreating to the warmth in order to buffer from the cold. So, why not workout from home. Do a home workout or even roll out your mat in the comfort of your own home - open up your body through asanas, get your joints, muscles and mind free flowing again!

No Regrets
The above speaks a million words. I, nor anyone I know, has ever done a workout and actually regretted doing it. If you've made the effort to head out to a yoga class or have the intention of going out for run, then what are you waiting for? Just do it! It will be worth it and you'll feel much better for it afterwards!
