Om Yoga Magazine // Get Things Done

Lately, I've been more than a little frustrated with myself. I've been setting goals and plans, as you may have seen in a variety of my posts such as my Sum It Up.. Sundays, Training Diaries etc.

I've been saying for the longest time that I wanted to start introducing weights and home workouts back into my routine and not just have running as my main source of exercise. I've had a training plan set for WestRun London this week and it's been less than stellar(as you may have ready from my training posts). I've been wanting to do more blogs and videos for my Youtube channel.

Instead of just getting everything done, I've been putting things off, I've not been committed enough, I've been lazy and I guess I've been resisting. All of these things just lead to disappointment and I have no-one to blame except myself.
In this months episode of the Om Yoga Magazine there was an article on Getting Things Done. It has a quick guide for overcoming resistance and achieving goals. PERFECT! Just what I needed.

Here's some of the points from the article that stuck with me the most:

Be very clear and focus
Before starting the day, its recommended to be clear about what you want to accomplish. To me, this will be having a plan, knowing what I'll do that day - do a run from my training schedule, a particular workout, a blog post, you name it.

It's unrealistic to think that you'll be able to finish multiple major tasks in one day, but finishing one of them will be a good start. It's all about focusing, finishing and moving onto the next task!

Have a set time and place
Make the most important task of the day a priority by setting an appointment(obviously not a real appointment), Have a schedule of when you're going to do that particular task.

For me, this might be running, or a workout. If I specifically set a time of day(early morning or in the evening) which is set and focused on that specific thing, it will be easier to make sure that it gets done. I can plan around the activity, making sure I've set alarms if it's an early morning run, plan when I'm going to eat if it's an evening run. It just makes things so much easier and there's little room for excuses.

Know your motivation
Ask yourself why you're doing it and why it's important to you. You need to have the answers to these questions in order to then gain the motivation that you need to complete them.

Just Start!
I just have to quote the article here when it says 'All the tips in the world won't make as much difference as this simple(and timeless) Instruction. Just Sit down and Start.'

There's no other way to overcome the resistance and disappointment of not meeting goals and sticking to plans like just starting(and there's no harm in starting over!)

Only 'doing' actually helps! and the only way to do it is to start!

You can read the whole article and more in this months magazine!

The article really struck a cord and got me thinking about my goals, what I want to accomplish and it also had me thinking about what I need to do achieve what I want.

The fact is, a majority of the time, I've been lazy(not getting up early enough and staying in bed longer) or not being committed enough - that's been particularly true when it comes to running/ training.

If I really want something, I have to work for it. If I want to lose some extra weight, I need to be stricter with my eating/exercise. If I want to run faster, I need to do more speed training. If I want to create more content for my blog/youtube, I need to make the time to sit down and do them.
I need to get focused and just get things done!

  1. I am a chronic procrastinator and then get so frustrated with myself for not achieving it. Sometimes, starting fresh can really help (I've been much better with my blogging since I put Tub on the Run to bed), but my biggest help is undoubtedly, in the words of Nike "just do it". Just getting on with it helps. The other thing, be kind to yourself :-) x

  2. @Steph Yep, I'm exactly the same, I've been doing it for weeks. It's going to take some getting used to of just doing things and not putting them off or saying I'll do them later. Or better yet.. saying I'll do something and then not actually doing it. I've got to commit to it!
