A little late with my post this month - I've been without a laptop and I've had some complications with the iMac I bought so I'm having all the luck right now, bare with me! Last month was not the best month. It was full of stress and with stress comes emotional eating. I think I've done OK given the circumstances but it really wasn't my aim for this month. Weight Loss wise, this year has not been great for me.

WEIGH IN

No shock that I'm back down again, this is what my weight does. Shame it cant just keep going down instead of yo-yo'ing all the time. Maybe as I start to get back into training for races and my upcoming half marathons and starting to prepare for my first Tri.. I may start to lose something if I really put in the effort. My weight has been stable since I took the photo the other week so that's a positive.

Last Months Weight: 163.8 lbs
This Months Weight: 162.2 lbs
Difference in Weight: - 1.6 lbs

Total lbs lost since my highest weight: 95.6 lbs

PROGRESS PICTURES & MEASUREMENTS

No change in measurements - though I'm not disappointed as I've kinda got used to the fact that my measurements don't move even though my weight does. I'm actually a little thankful for it - I cant imagine yo-yo-ing with measurements too and being down one month and back up the next. So at the moment I'm totally OK with it not moving!

THE PLAN

Last Months Plans:

So.. Last months plan was to do some home workouts. I managed 1-2 kettebell workouts that I remember and some very brief bits of core work but really, my head just wasn't in the game for it last month, I hated doing it and was in a bit of a rut.

I had my month planned out of workouts and exercise that I wanted to do - I basically have a monthly calendar spread with check boxes and things I want complete that day - whether that's swimming, cycling or running - you can totally add other things like making sure you've had enough water each day etc but mine was solely workouts based.

When you do them - you can then tick off the activities you've completed on your calendar. It'd look pretty cool to have ticks in all the boxes for everything you had planned out.In my case however, no matter how much I'd planned it out - sometimes it just doesn't work and last month was absolutely one of those months.

This Months Plan:

So.. this month I don't think I should focus so much on 'actions' as such - my workouts and exercise will come as they always do so I don't have to worry too much.. but I really want to come up with a strategy for the new year.

I'm sure I've mentioned this here on my blog as well as On my social media.. but it's been over two years since I had my surgery and I'm still 15 lbs heavier than I was before I went in.

I think I've lost my way slightly and I really need to go back to basics with my weight loss. So.. I'm gonna come up with a strategy of how to tackle the weight issue for the new year - there absolutely no point in me trying to make a change this month as there's just too much temptation involved around the holidays - but I hope to have a clear plan of what I want to do along with the goals that I want to achieve when the New Year Comes.. and it isn't that far away now!

I'll obviously be doing another one of these posts in the new year as my new starting point - and then I'll do another post shortly after with my plans for those that are interested.

I know I can do this, I just have to get my old Laura mindset back - not the one who likes to eat all the food and weighs 260+ lbs ;) but the one who had the drive, the focus and the willpower to push forward and lose the weight! She's in here somewhere, I just have to discover her again.

Monthly Stats // February

I can't believe how fast February went by. I feel like I closed my eyes for a second and we've skipped a whole month. It must be because February is a shorter month than the rest but geez.

This month has been a month that has tested me. It's been quite stressful, particularly towards the end of the month and I've struggled.

I had a good sit down to think last night before the beginning of a new month. To figure out what I want to achieve this month and how I'm going to achieve them. I need to focus on myself. Sort out the things that are stressing me out and get out of this god awful funk I've been in as of late. and I think most people know that you can't really make progress when you're stressed.

So, I made a plan.. I'll explain in more detail in another post that will probably go up tomorrow, but I've pretty much planned everything down to a T and as long as I stick to them, I should see some good progress this month.

So look out for another post tomorrow to find out what I'll be up to this month! but for now, we'll get onto my stats for this month.

WEIGH IN

Last Weight: 156.6 lbs

Today's Weight: 155.8 lbs

Loss/Gain This Week: -0.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 102.2 lbs

Could be better, but the stress I've been under this month has definitely not helped any of my progress. I'm happy with the 0.8 lb loss. Even more so, because I forgot to weigh in this morning so I had eaten prior to this weigh in.. So I'm probably lower than this.

MEASUREMENTS

PROGRESS PICTURES

No dramatic changes this month,goes part in parcel with no change in measurements. I'm not disappointed, there's no point. I don't want to start off March on a low.

It's also incredibly hard to get photos in the exact same sport with the same lighting for each picture. We all know how lighting can effect progress pictures and alter the perception and make it look like things have changed when it's just a lighting change. SO annoying!

So, another not-so-good month for stats but something I won't shy away from sharing with you all. The reality is that these things happen, life gets in the way, things don't always go as planned but the main thing is that I need to try and recover from this. I like to share every part of my journey with you all and keep this real.

As I mentioned earlier, I'll have a blog post up tomorrow explaining my plans for the month of March. I'm hoping to turn this around and have something positive to report!

Update & Sharing My Weight Loss Story!

Hi Everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates here on the blog. I have just been strung with a lot of bad luck recently and honestly, didn't have much to talk about.

As you'll probably know from my last post. I stubbed my toe on Saturday and I haven't been able to exercise since. I went for a checkup on Monday morning just to make sure I hadn't broken it. Luckily enough, the nurse thinks it's not broken and just badly bruised!

Either way, I've not been able to put any pressure on my foot at all for the last few days so exercise has been out of the question, especially since walking has been particularly difficult! It's getting better though, I'm able to put more pressure on my foot and the bruising and swelling is coming down so hopefully within the next couple of days, I should be back into the swing of things!

I'm actually gutted that I've had to miss a few days of #Janathon, I really wanted to do 30 days of exercise!

I also ended up getting a 24 hour sickness bug, it started whilst I was at work, I had terrible stomach ache and was feeling sick all the time. I ended up throwing up at work and when I got home, it was basically just trips to the toilet, being sick and sleeping in between. It sucked! I'm feeling better now.. I don't know if I could have handled more than one day with that!

So yeah, that's why I haven't been so present recently, I've just been quite down about not feeling 100% and not exercising definitely puts me in a bad mood!

The only thing I did manage to do whilst I was wallowing in self pity is film my next Youtube Video! I filmed my Weight Loss Story. I tried to make it very Q+A like with questions that I've usually been asked about my weight loss. If you're interested, the video is below!

Surgery // Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

If you haven't read or caught up on my previous skin removal surgery posts, click the Plastic Surgery Tab at the top of the page.

For me, I had a majority of my questions already answered by my surgeon in the consultation and I didn't have very many questions that I needed to ask when the time came to ask them.

I've combined all the questions that I WOULD have asked the surgeon, however most of them, like I said had already been covered.

So, lets get into them shall we! I'll have generic questions, not specific to the procedures but in general, then my specific procedure questions listed later in the post.

*** General Surgery Questions ***

How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?

Recovery period should be about two weeks before you are able to resume work, depending on your job and its activities. 6 weeks before you are able to start being active again.

You will preferably need someone to care for you for at least 1 week.

How long before I will be able to shower?

My surgeon said to not take the risk and to not shower for TWO WEEKS! He said to use wet wipes to wipe myself down with rather than run the risk of infection from the water.

I will be taking my surgeons advice, even though I'm not 100% comfortable with it.

All surgeons advice are different, some are able to shower after a week, some after a couple of days.

How long do you recommend I take off from work to heal properly?

2 Weeks at absolute minimum, 3 weeks is recommended.

Will I have surgical drains? How long will they be in for?

Yes, I will have surgical drains. My surgeon said that they would hope to remove them before I left the hospital (I will be there for a 2-day stay) but it just depends on how much fluid is being drained and can take longer (1-2 weeks)

How long before I will be able to exercise again?

My surgeon said it is usually around the 6 week mark that you will be able to LIGHTLY start exercising.

This is usually at your surgeons discretion and I will exercise when he gives me the good to go and not before then.

How long will I be under Anesthetic for?

For both procedures, you will be under anesthetic for ~5 hours.

How long will I have to wear a compression garment for?

A compression garment will have to be worn for 6 weeks.

Will I be attending post op appointments, who will these be done by?

You will be seen by a clinical nurse for your post op appointments. You will be expected to return at 7, 15, 30 and 90 days or as required after surgery.

Is there anything I can do to reduce scarring or bruising?

As much rest as possible is recommended after surgery. Some patients apply Vitamin E or Aloe Vera to the scar but do not use any creams on the scar until at least 6 weeks post op.

Anything I should avoid prior to surgery?

The following things should be avoided: Aspirin, Chinese Food, Stop Smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery (I don't anyway), Alcohol consumption should be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery (I don't drink). Contraceptive Pill must be stopped 4 weeks prior to surgery and resume 2 weeks after surgery (I have the implant, this has no effect).

Will either of the surgeries affect being pregnant later on in the future?

I have not had kids yet, but do plan on having children, though not in the near future.

The surgeries will not affect your pregnancy, however, pregnancy may reverse the results of your surgery. You can be left with loose skin after pregnancy which may need revision surgery.

Breast feeding can also reverse the affects of surgery and it is advised not to breast feed after having a breast uplift.

*** Specific Tummy Tuck Questions ***

Where will my scar(s) be positioned and will they be visible?

The scar will be positioned on the bikini line and the incision will be from hip to hip. This scar won't be visible with a bikini. You will also have a scar around the belly button as the belly button will need to be re-positioned.

What are the risks involved with Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Fluid Retention under the skin, this is normally reduced with the use of drains

Risk of Infection or delay in healing.

Numbness to the surrounding area - this should diminish over several months.

Dog ears is another thing that was mentioned during my consultation. This is a puckering of the skin on either side of the incision from where the skin has been pulled together. This is included in my aftercare and will be dealt with by revision surgery if it is needed.

*** Specific Breast Uplift /w Implants Questions ***

Where will my scar(s) be positioned and will they be visible?

There will be a scar on the crease on the underside of the breast, around the lower edge of the areola and a vertical scar from the areola to the crease.

What are the risks involved with Breast Uplift Surgery?

A risk of Capsular Contraction - Which is where the body can potentially reject the implant. Removal or release of the scar tissue and replacement of the implant usually solves this issue.

Risk of Infection or delay in healing.

Skin and Nipple Sensitivity may change after surgery.

Asymmetric Results cannot be 100% guaranteed (and I have one breast bigger than the other, so this probability slightly increases).

Are there any particular garments that should be bought prior to surgery?

A NON-Wired sports bra should be brought with you. After surgery you will already have been placed in the sports bra. I was recommended to bring several different sizes with me due to swelling.

I think that's it. I don't think I had any further questions, and if I did and I finally remember them, I'll add them here.

Please remember that a consultation and a surgeon is different for everyone and these are the guidelines and information I was given from my surgeon, this does not mean that the same rules would apply to you.

Surgery // My Second Consultation with The Hospital Group

So, I went for my third and final consultation for Skin Removal surgery with The Hospital Group.
If you haven't checked out my how my other consultations went, you can click the Plastic Surgery tab at the top of the page!

I emailed the Sally, my surgery coordinator that saw me the last time that I came in for a consultation. She notified me that surgery dates for booking are only available two months prior to when you are considering having surgery. I was pretty set on April, so I emailed her at and asked if I could have an appointment to see her to have a look at surgery dates and ask her some questions I had.

She mentioned that there was another surgeon in on the 7th February if I wanted to see a second surgeon. Originally, I was just going to go along with the first surgeon and book with him, but I saw no harm in having another consultation so I agreed.

The surgeon I was going to see was Mr Mario Russo (he is going to be my surgeon in April). I did some research on him to find out a little more about him. He's a celebrity surgeon, has been on TV for surgery like Embarrassing Bodies (show in the UK) and is famous with TOWIE stars.

I found out his nickname is 'Dr Boob' which seems quite appropriate as that's an area I was looking at having and I've heard a lot of good things about his work.

So, I went to see him on the 7th of February. Much like last time, I had to fill in my medical history and the clinic was running late again, meaning I had to wait 45 minutes past my appointment (this is the only thing bugging me currently, I HATE waiting around when my appointment is for a certain time).

The fundamentals of the actual consultation went pretty similar to the last one. Mr Russo went through my medical history, asked me why I was there and then examined me, same as last time.

However, I didn't get the same outcome that I expected based on the other consultation. He gave me his recommendation of a Breast Uplift with Implants and a Tummy Tuck.

Straight away, I asked why he didn't recommend a Fleur De Lis like the other surgeon. To which he explained that its a procedure that he would ONLY perform on patients that had really dramatic loose skin following weight loss and that I would achieve the same (flat stomach) results having a tummy tuck as I would from a Fleur de lis (but minus the scar, which is a HUGE bonus!).

He showed me the results that I would have afterwards by pulling and stretching the loose skin from my stomach downwards and explaining what he would remove and what I would be left with.

I expressed my concerns raised during my previous consultation, where the other surgeon mentioned that if I had a tummy tuck alone, when I bent over, the pouch of skin would still hang around my mid section.

Mr Russo is confident that this is not going to be an issue if I have a tummy tuck and I suppose if the results don't turn out as I expect, then I will have the opportunity to express this afterwards, but I'm pretty happy that Mr Russo feels confident enough to say that I won't have a problem.

He explained the scarring and any possible risks from surgery, something they have to tell us about. This included, obviously, the effects of having a child and that some of the results COULD be reversed. He also mentioned implant rejections, where your body can reject a foreign object such as the implant. A low possibility, but a risk that still needs to be mentioned.

He said that both the surgeries could be done in one, rather than the recommended two from the other surgeon (I asked Sally about this, it is based on how fast the surgeon is able to do the procedures).

I then met up with Sally, I explained that I wanted to see both of the surgeons work to see a comparison. Both of them were quite good. Mr Russo is very neat with his lines and is a perfectionist in the breast area, all of his work looked amazing!

I decided there and then to book the surgery with Mr Russo for the 10th April.

Generally, overall I felt happy with Mr Russo, he made me feel comfortable, I was able to have a normal conversation with him, he didn't make me feel nervous or embarrassed and seem to be very confident that I would achieve 'perfect (in his words) results'.

It's been quite a good outcome. I don't have to have two sets of surgery, which I was worried about for work. I would have had to have 2 lots of 2-3 weeks off work, which isn't very good for me when I'm in training at the moment.

It would also mean I'd be out of exercise for a very long time and I wasn't too happy about that. The thirdly, I wont need to have the big vertical scar going up the middle of my body - which for sure would get questions all the time and was one thing that almost put me off.

I know that a lot of people can see loads of surgeons before ultimately making the big decision but I'm happy with my decision to have Mr Russo as my surgeon.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm trying not to really look at any photos or read up much about the surgery because it makes me really nervous. I don't deal with pain well or anything gruesome looking, so I'm pretty sure looking at the scars after surgery is going to be quite an ordeal in itself.

but bring on 7 weeks! It's going to fly by!

#MNBChallenge Start of Week 3! and Monday Weigh In

UGH!

To say I'm disappointed this week would be an understatement but at least its something I guess!

I can't remember whether I mentioned it before, but I'm trying to get my weight around 130 lbs before my holiday - and hopefully maintain up until surgery day.

Reason being is that usually, I tend to gain weight when I go on holiday and I I don't want that to affect anything with regards to skin removal. Obviously, we'll still be going ahead with the surgery, but being at a smaller weight is much more favourable than being at a higher weight.

I figured if I get down to a lower weight, I'll have more leeway on possible weight gain during my holiday and I will even out at the same weight that I am now when it comes to surgery.

If I can't do it, its not a problem and I will just have to be VERY strict when it comes to eating, but every little helps..

So, yeah, I was disappointed to see a very small loss on the scale this week. I hope I can get this down more next week.

But! I've not let this put a downer on my day and I'm determined to make the rest of the day count!

I've not yet decided how I'm gonna spoil myself for todays challenge ;)

When I first looked at the schedule for this week, I was a little worried. I've never not had a day without meat and I've never eaten raw.. so I don't really know what will go down this week but I'll try my best!

I already take my lunch to work everyday, so Tuesday will be OK, as will Wednesday because I do WIAW posts. I don't usually make smoothies, so I'll have to put something together.

I've done OK for today's challenge. I didn't eat any meat. I would usually have it for lunch and dinner, so I'm good. Lets see what happens for the rest of the week!

Thank GOODNESS for that!

I closed my eyes when I weighed in the morning. I was dreading seeing my weight go up again this week.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case and its come back down slightly. I would have been happier if it was closer to 135, but I'll take the loss over a gain!

I'm just going to carry on like I did last week, although I'm supposed to be maintaining, I' like to try and get my weight nearer the 130 mark for the skin removal surgery, then I've got a little leeway with my weight after surgery. If not, that's completely fine.

More than anything, I want to be as fit as I can be before I go into surgery so I don't want to be slacking too much on my workouts despite the terrible weather.

Surgery // My Consultation with Harley Medical Group

As always, if you've not read any of my previous Skin Removal Posts, you can click the Plastic Surgery Tab at the top of my blog to read those first :)

So, I'll be talking about the first consultation that I had regarding Skin Removal Surgery with a private company Harley Medical Group.

After looking around at different private companies for skin removal surgery, I came across Harley Medical Group. I'd heard of them before, they're quite a popular company for skin removal surgery and I'd seen some of the adverts on TV.

I emailed through their websites for price enquiries for the procedures that I was looking at having and was asked if I wanted to come in for a free consultation. PERFECT! Being able to talk to a professional about what I wanted done. I had my consultation on the 28th October (2013).

The clinic wasn't too far away from where we live, around a 30 minute drive (I take this into consideration as this is where my post-op appointments would be).

I was obviously nervous upon arriving as it is a big deal to me. I was met by a Nurse and she made me feel welcomed and calmer. I filled in paperwork, the paper work is your details and your medical history to fill in. After it was all done, I went in for my consultation.

The nurse went over my details with me and asked me what I was there for and we had some general chit chat about my weight loss. I was examined, the most embarrassing part of it all. If I am embarrassed at looking at myself in the mirror, I wasn't exactly comfortable with someone else taking a look.

The nurse agreed that both procedures were necessary as the loose skin I have cannot be reduced through exercise or diet.

I was told that a Breast Uplift and Tummy Tuck was recommended, they explained the procedures and the scarring that I would have after the procedures. I was also notified of the risks of my results of surgery being reversed if I were to have kids and that she wouldn't recommend breast feeding as that can also reverse the effects.

I did ask whether or not I would need implants based on the amount of breast tissue I have left and was not given a clear answer. Not much detail was gone into about the tummy tuck either, it seemed like a breast uplift was the main topic to talk about.

This was the disappointing part of my consultation. I would have to have ANOTHER consultation with an actual surgeon to find out more information that I required and this came with a fee. Only the surgeon would be able to tell me whether or not I would need breast implants.

I was given a quote for both of the procedures and had the opportunity to ask any questions (I'll go over questions and answers in another post when I've been through all of my consultations).

I was given an information pack containing quotes for procedures, information booklets for each of the procedures and a resume for the surgeon that would perform the procedures.

This was another part that I wasn't particularly happy about. There were no list of surgeons that could perform the surgery. After the consultation, I had a look at my information pack and decided to do some research on the surgeon that I was recommended. Unfortunately, I couldn't find ANY information at all on this surgeon other than that he was GMC Registered which was concerning.

I couldn't view his work or find anything about the type of work that he had performed. I looked on the Harley Medical Group website and again, could not find any information on any of the surgeons that they have working for them, which I found odd.

I decided not to proceed any further, I would purely be going on word of mouth and recommended surgeons by the company themselves rather than that of patients experience.

That's not to say that other people wouldn't have a good experience with them. The Nurse who did my consultation was great, but this is such a big deal to me and not being able to find any surgeon information was a bad point that pushed my decision.

So overall, it wasn't a good start to my consultations. I've had another consultation with a different company and I'm having a second consultation with a different surgeon from the same company tomorrow.

I've been following Fit Approach for a while now on social media and their mission just resonates with me. Their community is filled with Motivation, Inspiration and Support and its great to follow people along.

FitApproach have partnered with Lorna Jane for a month long challenge, Move Nourish Believe Challenge and I jumped at the chance to join in, why not?!

I had heard of Lorna Jane before but never bought any of their items. I recently discovered their website MoveNourishBeleive which has great motivation and tips for everyone.

Everyone is free to join in on the challenge, you can RSVP to the event HERE.

So, here's what's going on for the first week!

Week One - #Move
2/3: Sweat-it-out! -Show us your favorite way to sweat!
2/4: Change it up! – Sweat a new way! Select a workout from movenourishbelieve.com/category/move and show us your post-sweat session selfie.
2/5: Let’s get planking! – Plank for at least five minutes today! You can split the planks up.
2/6: Buddy up! – Workout with a friend today!
2/7: Fave Friday! – Show us your five fitness favorites! Exercises, people, whatever gets you moving and motivated!
*Recap your week in a blog post!

You can post an image everyday on Twitter and Instagram, tagging @fitapproach and @lornajaneactive and using the #mnbchallenge and #sweatpink hashtags.

If you take part in the event daily for all of the 3 weeks, you can be in with a chance of winning $1000 to spend at Lorna Jane!

Now onto my weigh in for this week:

Last Weeks Weight: 136.4

This Weeks Weight: 137.2

Weigh In Results: + 0.8

Total Weight Loss: 120.8 lbs

Ugh.... I HATE seeing a gain.. and its not been just this week if you've already read my post from last weeks weigh in.

I know why I've gained, but it doesn't make it any easier to see. I'm on my sweet treat ban.. which is going well.. but its early days, its only been 3 days so far.

However, I was slightly happy about my weigh in.. as I'd weighed in earlier in the week and was ALMOST creeping back in the 140's and that completely kicked my out of my funk. I don't want to be back there.

I hope, by next week, maybe I'll be back down to around 135 again. That's my happy weight.

I now just want to focus on staying on track. Keeping away from the sweet treats and keeping active with my daily yoga.. and ofc the #mnbchallenge :)
